Plenty of plush should never be submerged — anything with a sound box, battery pack, glued eyes, wired limbs, heat-pack insert or genuinely old fabric. That does not mean they cannot be cleaned.
Dry cleaning a plush at home is mostly mechanical: lift the dirt out rather than dissolving it. It is slower than a wash cycle but it does not risk the structure.
The bicarbonate method
Put the plush in a bag or pillowcase with two or three tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda, seal it and shake for about a minute so the powder works through the pile.
Leave it for 20 to 30 minutes, then vacuum the powder out through a stocking stretched over the nozzle, or brush it off outdoors. This lifts surface oils and most of the smell.

Spot cleaning without a ring
The mistake with spot cleaning is going straight at the mark, which leaves a clean halo. Work from the outside of the area inward, with barely damp cloth and a very small amount of mild detergent.
Blot, never rub. Rubbing mats the pile permanently, and a matted patch is far more visible than the original stain.
- Work outside-in to avoid a clean ring.
- Barely damp cloth; blot rather than rub.
- Finish by blotting with a clean damp cloth to lift detergent residue.
- Brush the pile back in one direction while it is still damp.
Freezing for dust mites
Sealing a plush in a bag and freezing it for 24 to 48 hours kills dust mites without water. It does not remove them, so vacuum or shake the plush afterwards.
This is the usual recommendation for an allergy-prone child's comfort object that also cannot be washed weekly.
Steam, carefully
A garment steamer held several inches away will freshen and de-mat pile and kill surface bacteria. Keep it moving and never rest it on the fabric.
Do not steam anything with glued components, foam-backed features or a heat-pack insert.
